Pond Myths

Ponds take hours a week to care for

False If your pond has been constructed properly with good filtration and water flow you will spend little time maintaining it. The skimmer basket should be dumped once a week which takes all of a minute to do.  Beneficial bacteria such as Clarity Max should be poured in every 2 weeks to maintain optimal levels of bacteria to prevent algae growth in you beautiful Water Feature. The use of UV light is also very beneficial in sterilizing the pond water thus reducing free floating algae spores and pathogens.

You need to drain and clean your pond regularly

False! Less is more! Your pond is an ecosystem with many living organisms. Allow the pond to remain balanced by leaving the majority of the water in it year round unless you have a huge build up of fall leaves. Leaves can be prevented by netting your pond in the fall and cleaning the Skimmer regularly. Crystal Clear's Spring and Fall Prep works incredibly well at breaking down the leaves and debris that have reached the bottom of the pond over the winter months. We personally have tried it with tremendous success and much less work! Our personal favourite products to use are the D solv line from Crystal Clear!

Predators will eat all of your fish!

Well...If you provide a cave at the bottom of the pond for your fish to hide in they most likely will not be dinner for predators. Unless you own an Eagle or Raccoon farm....

Rocks and gravel make it difficult to clean your pond

False! Rocks and gravel offer a natural place for beneficial bacteria to colonize. This bacteria breaks down the fish waste and debris that would otherwise accumulate in the pond and turn into sludge. Regardless of your pond’s location (i.e. close to trees and loads of leaves), or how many fish you have in it, you’ll find that having rocks and gravel in your pond not only makes it look better, but it makes it healthier as well. So contrary to the myth, having rocks and gravel on the bottom of your pond actually allows Mother Nature to clean up after herself.

You can use a timer on your pond!

False! Your pond is a living, breathing ecosystem that needs constant oxygen. If you shut your system down at night, you will reduce the growth of beneficial bacteria to fight algal blooms, and your fish will have a hard time breathing. You CAN shut down a Pondfree Water Feature, unless you have plants that in the stream that depend on  the constant flow of water. To save money on energy, you can install an aeration system that runs 24/7 and then you can turn off the waterfall when you are not sitting beside it.

Your pond must be at least three feet deep in order to keep Koi

False! There are thousands of two-foot deep ponds around the country, full of happy and healthy koi. If your worried about your fish, we have an awesome line of fish care products to prevent infections, maintain slime coat and of course bacterial control.

Koi can’t be kept in a pond that also contains plants.

False! Koi and plants compliment and need one another. In nature, fish feed on plants and as a result, the fish produce waste, which is broken down by beneficial bacteria on the bottom of your pond, which in turn, is used as fertilizer by the plants to grow and produce more natural fish food. Plants will grow lush and thick if their roots are “pruned” by the fish nibbling on them. It’s known as the circle of life, and to imply that koi and plants shouldn’t co-exist is to ignore nature. Plants will draw nutrients best if they are directly planted into the pebbles of the stream or pond bottom, not in pots of soil. If the plants selected are hardy they can be left in place over the winter months. Try our Thrive Aquatic Plant Fertilizer... You won't regret it!

You have to bring your fish inside for the winter.

Well... It is possible to keep fish in a pond over the winter months even on the Canadian Prairies! You must oxygenate the water and allow the gasses to escape by maintaining a hole. If the pond and stream are constructed properly with insulation and inline heaters the stream can run all winter long. If constructed properly, these streams can create amazing looking ice sculptures along the stream bed! We've got an awesome line of fish food for every season. If your fish are happy, you should be happy too!

A pond in your backyard means you will have a lot of mosquitoes.

This is False! Mosquitoes will generally only lay their eggs in still, stagnant water. If the mosquitoes happen to lay eggs in your pond and the mosquito larvae hatch, the fish in your pond will gobble them up. Use your Airmax Eco aerator to keep those pesky blood suckers away!

You cannot have a pond in an area where there are a lot of trees.

FalseYes, you will have more leaves in your pond in the fall  but if you have a well designed and properly installed skimmer sucking the  water off the top of your pond, it will pull most of the leaves and related debris into the skimmer net which is easily emptied. This takes very little time to empty, and it will only be a daily task in the fall if your pond is close to trees. If there are a lot of fallen leaves, then purchase a net to place over the water feature until all of the leaves are down and cleaned up.

You should locate your pond in the lowest area of your yard

False!!! This is probably the worst location for your investment because of  run-off containing toxins and fertilizers that can creep their way into your pond. When your pond is positioned near your house, you can take in the beauty and tranquility of your pond when entertaining friends or just lounging on your deck.

It’s okay to use chemicals in a pond

No,no no! Chemicals are very harsh on the precious ecosystem happening in your water feature. If you have fish they will not last long if you are adding Chemicals. It is much better to work with Mother Nature and keep our environment happy and healthy. Crystal Clear Biological Clarifier is naturally occurring bacterium and will not harm the environment but yet is very effective.
